Radio Communications with Portables
Back to Manual
Every effort has been made to accommodate the use of portable units within the fire communications system. However, many conditions exist which can severely limit the coverage obtained with portable units. Ground terrain, high output mobiles transmitting over portable transmission which cannot be copied are but a few problems encountered when using portable units. It is for these reasons, that all attempts to call the communications center should be done through a mobile radio unit, except in emergency situations. Portable units used properly are a valuable tool to any emergency scene.
Two (2) fireground channels have been included in the system. Every effort should be made to utilize these channels for all portable units operating at the emergency scene. As it will eliminate the problems of being walked on by higher output mobile units. The officer-in-charge should have access to communications with portable and mobile units at all times.
Portable Unit Identifiers
Portable units will normally use designations, which identify with
the apparatus to which assigned--followed by the word "portable"
when used by non-officers.
Example: "Engine 19 portable"
Officers shall maintain their identity at all times when operating with portable units.
Radio operators are reminded to wait for the audible signal to stop before beginning their transmission.
